On Thursday the 19th of August a couple of the @DunningDesign Team attended #themeet140 in the Lansdowne pub in the west end of Glasgow. Julian represented Dunning and Claire ‘came out’ as the face behind @skelptarse to much amusement and ‘I should have guessed’ type remarks. The event was incredibly well attended with over 120 eager Tweeters talking to each other IRL. Whilst a great networking experience in itself, the more remarkable outputs have been the blogs that the relationships established and/or strengthened have inspired. Claire met @blessedsister on entering the Lansdowne and was inspired enough by her blog 140 Strangers…! to post this in reply: Hi Blessed Sister, Now we are no longer strangers and I reckon that happened two seconds after we introduced ourselves, I feel at ease asking ‘how did your exam go?’ I do hope that Read more...

Media Academies are Centres of Excellence in the teaching of Media production. There are around 22 in the UK. If you compare this with the number of Further Education establishments in the UK, it’s clear, it’s not that easy to become a Member of this prestigious gang. For a start, there’s a process which involves a detailed approvals visit in the form of an inspection. After this, a rigorous process takes place with the staff and students covering criteria which includes Interviews, Staff appraisal, Business Planning Research and examining Work experience processes. As a Board Member of Skillset Scotland, our own Julian Westaby was an ‘Industry Representative’ during the recent process of deciding whether University of West of Scotland (UWS) should gain induction to the Media Academy. What made it doubly interesting is that they’d tried in the past to Read more...

The Dunning Lab is now open for business. Our first Social Media Marketing ‘students’ have been in to our custom-built facility to learn all about Dunning DNA and the impact it will have on their business. Our very own Claire Dunning, a fellow and board member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing ran the first training session with Co-Director Julian Westaby. Although Dunning DNA is Brand focused, a lot of the training we’re providing is in the area of Social Media Marketing. It’s a lot more than just sticking a Twitter and a Facebook Page up. It’s about using creative content to help you stand out from the crowd. The Dunning DNA Lab is unique and our Social Media Marketing facility is the first purpose-built facility in Scotland. If you’d like to ‘enroll’ your team to start a Knowledge Transfer Read more...

If 40 per cent of trips in Scotland are taken by those who live here, should we urge Scots to forget their passports and discover the ‘staycation’ phenomenon? After all, a recent, £250,000 drive behind it expects to generate £7.5 million for Scotland. So, preaching to the sort-of-converted is a good thing.

However, there’s other more luxury side of the coin. We now compete in a Global marketplace AND people are seeking ‘above-and-beyond’ adventures and more excitement in their travels. It seems that Luxury and Adventure Travel could also be very important to Scotland. The travel elite don’t just want to stay in 5-star hotels anymore, they want to jump out of helicopters to go skiing, get car tours around idyllic spots, arrange personalised art and culture tours… Anything, as long as it’s THEIR holiday. It also highlights Dunning DNA, our brand building tools, which go deep into the foundations of an organisation to build memorable and interesting brands. If not, it could easily come across as a boring, old, jaded, Industry fart, taking a pot-shot at our Education system and its inability to arm students with the necessary chutzpah for them entering possible employment in the ‘big bad world’. If it does come across like this, we apologise, but we think honesty, straight-talking and a ‘cut to the chase’ aspect is the wake-up call required, particularly when we look at our experiences over the past few days. So, without any further ado, some killer things that we think are fundamentals for Marketing/Advertising/Digital/Design/Communications hopefuls.
We’re making a pretty good job of getting all the media forces working together for our clients. We reckon we’re also injecting a great deal of creativity, into the whole mad mix that’s generally referred to as ‘social media’. Yup, we’d like to think that a lot of what we do is fairly cutting-edge and quite, no, make that definitely, rather clever. However, every now and again, something so creative comes along that it simply fills you with a sense of awe. It makes you realise that with cutting-edge digital technology and a creative mind, literally ANYTHING is possible. One such piece of ‘we’re not worthy’-ness work has emerged recently. Unusually, it’s come from what some might say is the unlikely creative melting-pot of… Scandinavia. Basically, it’s a truly amazing ‘viral’ with cinematic qualities, which was created by Draft FCB in Read more...

However, this weE bit of trending the search words ‘Clegg’ and ‘Volcano’ was very interesting. If you launched a cleaning product on the Internet called Volcano Clegg a few weeks ago, so what? If you’d launched it this week, you’d have cracked it! This month, we’re working in the worlds of Chambers of Commerce, Recruitment Consultancies, Wood-Burning Stove Technology, Investors in People, Defence Technology, Christian Care Homes…you get the picture. A bit of a ‘broad church’, you could say. Anyway, what do all these diverse organisations and industries have in common and why have they come to us? What is it that we’re using to create compelling brands? Basically we start by asking Dunning’s 4 Killer Questions?
There’s talk of ‘digital’ this and ‘internet’ that, thrown into every pub conversation and it’s clear it’s ‘the future’. But we reckon, when it comes to speed, we’re not even at the races. For instance, at Dunning we pay for an Internet connection that’s ‘up to 8mbps’. We tested our speed and it was indeed ‘up to 8mbps’… it was about 5.5mbps. Sounds okay and it’s actually enough to do most, fairly-standard office stuff. However and it’s a BIG However: If you’re going to be a LEADING Digital Economy, this is flipping hopeless. Unfortunately in Scotland, we’re competing in a bloody inconvenient thing called the ‘Global Marketplace’. The great news here is that we’ve got a Government who have just announced an initiative and we were lucky enough to attend the launch of Interactive Scotland.
It’s Election time again and although we’ve tried to veer-away from it, we’ve feel we’ve got to comment on the recent Election shenanigans, from a marketing angle. It seems to us that whether it’s Clegg, Brown or Cameron, there’s not a lot of innovation going on, anywhere. We’re not suggesting that British politics jumps on the USA bandwagon and gets really cheesy but why not get a wee bit more ‘social’ like Barack did? Over here, it’s still the same old knocking copy and condescending stuff we’re getting subjected to. No-one’s ‘show-boating’, in a good way. In our opinion, the political marketing process should be leading the way and demonstrating real innovation. It’s something the whole country’s focused on and as they get masses of FREE airtime to be clever, they have to capitalise on this. So far, one week Read more...

Louise kindly wrote us a nice blog on her ‘Mad Men’ experience. What an opportunity for a teenager! If you’re in the least bit interested in Advertising and Marketing, prepare to be very jealous! “For a change I felt excitement on a Monday morning, waking up to head to the Airport for New York City! First day I arrive I head straight for the typical hot dog stand and order my Dog with ‘Ketchup’.
A number of the Dunning team attended the Annual SCDI forum, which took place last week in St Andrews. Whilst we didn’t ‘Re:wire’ Scotland as the topic of the forum in the Fairmont Hotel suggested, we feel we’ve now helped to turn-on Scotland’s digital capability and the event certainly got a few people pulsing! A few hundred of Scotland’s entrepreneurs, political hotshots, rich and successful people and general movers-and-shakers got together to listen and contribute-to a broad debate on the future of Scotland. Bold Thinking, Tough Choices and Clear Focus were the three sub-plots for discussion and although there were a number of avenues not investigated (not surprising in only a day-and-a-half) there was a great deal of food for thought and, we feel, a large amount of forward momentum created. Chief protagonists and those with the most forthright opinions Read more...

William Hague obviously gets to meet lots of political powerhouses, in his high-profile role, in the Shadow Cabinet. But has he met more famous politicians than Claire Dunning? I very much doubt it! Claire obviously has seen it all before and adds the former ‘Tory Boy‘ to the ever-lengthening list of ‘Politico’s’ she’s had her photie taken with: ‘Mandy’, ‘Broonie’, Anthony Charles Lynton Blair etc etc. She’s met more ‘Big Wigs’ than Elton John and Bruce Forsyth’s make -up artists, put together. As you’ll see from the photo, Mr Hague’s quite an imposing figure though, as Claire’s not exactly a midget. She was too short to be a supermodel but was thrown-out of The Royal School of Ballet when she stretched to five and a half feet… There’s no denying, he’s got presence and if things had turned out differently, Read more...

At the end of this week, we’re decanting to St Andrews for the Annual Scottish Council for Development in Industry (SCDI) Forum. As you’ll see above, this year’s theme is Re:wiring Scotland and as we’ve created the whole Identity for the event, we reckon it’s going to be great. Really, it’s ’must-go-to’ event for all forward-thinking companies and organisations operating in Scotland. Rewiring Scotland (which takes place over two days at the Fairmont near St Andrew’s) comes at a really interesting time for Scotland. Anecdotally, we’ve heard from a lot of people who seem to believe that the worst of ‘the recession’ is behind us but we’ve also spoken to others (particularly in the Public sector), who reckon the savagery of spending cuts are only just beginning to manifest themselves. In Glasgow alone this week, there’s been a couple of Read more...

We’ve been watching the Winter Olympics on the telly and although it’s not had the same amount of hype we feel as past Winter Olympics, it’s still rivetting. However, it’s a bit ironic that places like Vancouver and Whistler and the likes who are normally seen as default ski paradises are suffering from lack of snow! You’ll probably have noticed, it’s been quite snowy in Scotland! Our Director, Julian Westaby has just returned from The Cairngorms and his pictures show that it’s absolutely incredible up there, at the moment. It’s too soon to tell but it’s looking like this season will be the best skiing season in Scotland-ever. Records are getting broken all the time and it’s even had a knock-on for those urban skiers, near Paisley! We’ve done a bit of a straw poll (okay, we asked all the punters in the studio here) and it appears that NOBODY actually likes Valentine’s Day. So, how come, in the face of this overwhelming abhorrence of this crass commercialisation and over-inflation of all things ‘D’Amour’, do we continually get erm…sucked-into it, every bloody year? Love isn’t just blind, it appears to be terminally stupid. Personally, I thought ‘Valentine’s’ was a ‘Day’ invented by some red-braces-wearing, enterprising, PR person back in 1980’s London, while he was waiting the three days for his mobile phone to charge up. A bit like ‘National Sausage Week’, ‘Hug An Asylum-Seeker Tuesday’ or whatever else they dreamed-up, to gain what used to be called ‘column inches’, when we Read more...

There’s an unlikely headline. So how come the World’s most hated man is funny? There’s lots of stuff floating through the Internet but one of the consistently funny things are the ‘Hitler’ videos that have been circulating the Globe. The actual idea sounds a bit naff; take an existing bit of footage from a foreign language film (admittedly a very gripping film) and simply add subtitles to it. It doesn’t really sound too promising, until you actually see one of these mini masterpieces. The videos cover everything from the ‘Trams’ situation in Edinburgh through to Manchester United football matches and everything in-between. The very latest being one we knocked up last night about the Glasgow Airport Rail Link. The language used is erm…choice (definitely not for kids or sensitive office environments). The film in question is Downfall (German: Der Untergang) Read more...

In Oz, January 26 is a National holiday and it’s an opportunity for them to indulge in the Three ‘B’s (beach, barbeque, beer) and generally have a good time and express their Antipodean-ness. It’s a tonic wine called Buckfast. Now, Buckfast’s not exactly the elixir of the Gods but it’s not alone in this situation. It’s not the only ‘cheap’ alcohol product aimed at what could be seen as the ‘underbelly’ of Scottish society. ALL the Councils in Scotland seem to have been caught with their pants down because it’s cold and logistically and statistically, this can’t be seen as acceptable? In our computer-modelled-to-death world, there has to be much better planning than this? It’s a shambles and I know it’s easy to hark on about the Alpine and Baltic States and Canada and other places being able to cope but it’s cyclical! We were DUE a cold winter, so to only be prepared for a NORMAL winter, seems to be a bit short-sighted, or daft even! Maybe we’re taking a simplistic view but there has to be a ‘what if’ scenario for every aspect of forward-planning.
Well chaps, that’s us closing the doors on December 23rd, for them to re-open, in a shiny new decade, on January 5th 2010. It’s been a very ‘interesting’ year for us, culminating in Claire Dunning being appointed to the International Board of Trustees for the Charted Institute of Marketing. Further to this, Julian Westaby has been appointed to the Board of Skillset Scotland. It’s clear we’ve got talent, experience and now, a nice little bit of Kudos to start a New Year with! We’ve also secured a fantastic new member of the team Aleks Bochniak, who starts with us on January 7th. He’s a digital strategist par excellence and will be hitting the ground running as we’ve ALREADY got a number of major new projects in the pipeline. We’re also looking to meet with other talented and interesting people who Read more...

Good company, good food and the good old Glesga ‘banter’ were out in force to celebrate the end of another business year with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce’s president and our own MD, Claire Dunning earlier this week. The venue was the stunning private members club 29 in Royal Exchange Square. Claire chose 29 not only because she is a member but to reflect the transition the Chamber has experienced over the last two years whilst she’s been at the helm, as President. There’s no denying it’s been a tough two years trading. However, a refreshed and strengthened Board, led by a young female, entrepreneurial president has had a positive impact. With Stuart Patrick as the new chief executive and the shiny, brand-new commercial director, Richard Muir – keen as mustard, Richard attended the reception the day before he started – Read more...

The Cammy Leon Gallery, which ‘popped-up’ in November was a HUGE success! We created a multi-media installation here at Dunning Towers and introduced lots of clever and talented people to OTHER clever and talented people. The evening entitled The Secret Stramash of Spectacular Shenanigans, was erm…different and DEFINITELY lived up to the ‘Stramash’ billing. The Gallery was Curated by Fine Arts supremo Eilidh Young, who assembled an amazing array of talent. Art met Business, creativity burgeoned, music was played, poetry read, movies were watched, wine was quaffed, beer was drunk, more beer was drunk, Oddbins had a field day. If you’d like Eilidh to do an event for you, she gets great people, takes all the organisational heat off you and is great fun to deal with, so engage with her soon, before she gets too busy!
The Secret Stramash of Spectacular Shenanigans! That was a proper night! We had a right few people here on Friday for the launch of our Guerilla project, The Cammy Leon Gallery. With well over a hundred people in through the door, lots of work sold (to VERY high-profile buyers) and with lots of new friends made, we’re certainly going to be doing another. The whole purpose of The Cammy Leon Gallery was to showcase up-and-coming art talent, but it’s done much more than that. It introduced interesting people to each other, it let proud parents see their talented kid’s work, actually up on a wall in a non-college setting, it also let artists sell some of their works, for no commission! A highlight for me was the rich variety of live music which was featured. We had an eclectic mix Read more...

It seems to have come around so quickly but it’s now here! The Cammy Leon Gallery AKA The Secret Stramash of Spectacular Shenanigans comes to 90 Mitchell Street, as from Friday 27th November. It’s a mix of the brightest, multifaceted creative talent, from all over Scotland and if we’re being honest, we don’t really know what to expect! It’s certainly not going to be bloody boring. At the moment, it’s got a bit of ”Guerrilla’ feel to it, which is what we’re aiming for, so that’s good! One all the work is up, it’s going to be magic! Some of the short films on display are very, very interesting as well. Anyway, it’s packed-out already, so you’re too late for tomorrow, but if you fancy coming along to the NEXT Secret Stramash of Spectacular Shenanigans, let us know! There’s really too much happening to talk about here but it’s basically a hotbed of all the creative talent in West of Scotland. With every form of visual arts being represented and with a number of musical genres being featured, there will be something to interest everyone. However, when said Old Etonian is none other than Sir Ranulph Fiennes, if you’d suddenly remembered an urgent dentist’s appointment, you’d have missed out. We were present at the SCDI Annual Dinner and International Awards at Edinburgh’s EICC last weekend, where the ‘World’s Greatest Living Explorer’ explained, in his own unique, dry, witty and incredibly-understated way, how he’s managed to do…well, just about blinkin’ everything. In modern-day life, hyperbole abounds and lots of ‘famous-for-15-minutes’ stars are eulogised for their ‘inner strength’, allowing them to get through to the next round in a dancing competition or winning a karaoke-type singing contest…Sir Ranulph’s unbelievable tales about his truly extraordinary Read more...

A year ago, I did a project with the students at Central College in Glasgow where we were ‘re-inventing’ the Scottish ‘square’ sausage. The square sausage, or ‘flat’ sausage or ’sliced’ sausage, or ‘slicing’ sausage or ‘lorn’ sausage or sometimes ‘Lorne’ sausage (it’s called different things by different demographics) comes in many guises and it’s a Scottish national delicacy. It’s peculiarly Scottish. A sausage wi’ nae skin. You can get it in slices, or in a ‘block’ which enables you to carve off manly chunks as the filling for proper, industrial-scale breakfast rolls. Now, the square sausage, it gets a bit of a kicking from the Healthy Eating brigade because in it’s common-or-garden form, served in a roll, out of burger vans, at concerts and football matches, it’s a bit of an unknown quantity. There are numerous horror stories as Read more...

We’re introducing a crazy marketing challenge: Become THE expert in your field, in Scotland, within six months. Yes, that’s right, irrespective of how ‘BIG’ or ‘SME’ you are, the power to do this is in your own hands, using the ‘miracle’-‘Social Marketing’! “Social Marketing, what’s that?” You’d be right to ask because it’s a subject that has had more rubbish spouted about it than any other marketing phenomenon. ‘Google’: ‘social marketing’ and you get 149 million results! So, what’s the truth? Well, using a 100% measurable, evolving, improving marketing platform, could at least, be quite interesting, but how do you dip ‘a toe in the water’? We’re simplifying here obviously but it involves, joining-up bits of software and ‘the usual Internet suspects’ such as ‘Facebook’ or ‘Bebo’, so people find out all about you. The important factor (the ‘social’ bit) Read more...

Of course, there are lots of historical reasons why Scotland’s major airport still relies on cabs and buses to ferry the increasing number of visitors and business tourists into the city. The Dr Beeching train infrastructure cuts which ravaged the rail network in the 1950′s were set against a backdrop of a fairly bankrupt Britain, where a lot of the soothsayers were thinking that cars and buses were ‘the future’ anyway. Trains (and trams, for those of an Edinburgh persuasion!) were seen as outdated, old-fashioned, slow, noisy etc etc. To rational people, it might seem completely and utterly bonkers that in Fife, at St Andrew’s, the actual Read more...

The chat round our Monday morning Chablis at Dunning towers was the ‘quite remarkable’ (as David Coleman used to say) story that the next England International Football game is ONLY going to be available for footie fans to view over the Internet. For a fee of anything between a fiver or a tenner (depending on when you sign-up) you’ll get access to the streaming of this bit of football history. It’s NOT going to be on television for the first time ever. England v Ukraine at a laptop near you! It’s all been happening in the football arena as this comes hot on the heels of the mighty Kilwinning Rangers announcing that they’ve covered a game on Twitter http://twitter.com/steadythebuffs a Scottish first, according to them. How exactly this is going to work is obviously going to be the most interesting part but Read more...

Glasgow Business Awards Next Thursday, the Glasgow Business Awards take place at the Crowne Plaza on the banks of the Clyde. Once again, it’s been sponsored by our chums at Bank of Scotland. There are nine awards up for grabs and Dunning are sponsoring our own special award for ‘The Best Performing Business with under 25 Employees’. We’ve also created the brand and designed all the presentations for the evening, so it’s obviously going to be a top-notch, black tie ‘do’. We’ve been heavily-involved in the whole judging process and what this means is, we know who all the Winners are! Of course, there’s absolutely no danger we’re going to tell you who each winner, in each of the nine categories is. Well, we could but we’d then have to kill you. He simply went to the pictures when courting, to see the new fangled ‘talkies’ which were all the rage, way back then. So, when Julian told us he was to introduce over 50 schoolkids from Dunbartonshire and Helensburgh to his cookie concept of ‘Speed-Branding‘, to gauge their perceptions of branding and marketing, we were a bit sceptical. “Aren’t 16-18 year old kids a bit of a lost cause, the so-called ‘hoodie-generation’ we keep reading about in the ‘Red Tops’?”, we said. It’s the ‘tabloid’ term for those punters that fold a firm, only to open-up as a similar outfit, (with a slightly different name and most of the same staff) a few days later. Now, there’s lots of legal and moral arguments as to what exactly is the right, wrong, cynical, naughty and just downright shitty thing to do. We’re not judging here, as it’s usually pretty hard to comment on the demise and rise of any firm, because you don’t know all the facts. However, it’s interesting to note the diffferent attitudes people have to the failure or folding of a firm. As ’pals’ of the place, we obviously like Glasgow’s innovative theatre space, which nestles in the Gorbals, but is just a few minutes from the ‘main drag’ of the City Centre. Amazingly, the ‘Citz’ as all ‘wegies’ call it, has been on the go since the 1940′s and it’s had a right few famous people through the doors. I found out today that one of today’s speakers, ex-Glasgow Lord Provost Liz Cameron was totally gutted to find out Rupert Everett was a gay man. He is? You learn something new every day.
We were one of the partners in Global Ambitions, the major SCDI/Scottish Development International conference on Scotland’s International Future, which took place at Murrayfield Stadium yesterday. We attend and partner up with lots of events but this one was very important for two reasons. Firstly, it was a meeting of the great and good, and was non-sector specific. Basically, everyone with an interest in Scotland’s future attended and it was a bit of a ‘who’s who’ of the corporate and public sectors in Scotland. Secondly and probably more importantly was the up-beat nature of the event. Far from being rich in a ‘batten-down-the hatches’ rhetoric, it was, dare we say it, rather upbeat. All the presentations will be available on the SCDI website shortly so we won’t labour on the exact content but it’s fair to say, it was very Read more...

If as many folk had shown interest when it was open it would have not needed to close! However, Glasgow’s own Internet phenomenon/BBC comedian Limmy summed it up on the link we posted when he said he wasn’t sure if you were allowed to go in, or not? That’s also the reaction and the comments I got from a lot of people over the weekend. Just not clear enough what it was. Anyway, until we hear more on the Lighthouse’s fate (and yes, we’d like to suggest things here!), let’s discuss the newcomer, Trongate 103, in more detail.
As the beam is turned off at The Lighthouse, Scotland’s ultra-expensive, one-time exemplar for design excellence, another Glasgow ‘centre of creativity’ opens, less than a mile away! Now, pedants could argue that there’s a big difference between ‘design’ and ‘creativity’ but the closing of one £multi-million ‘venue’ to be replaced by a pretty similar (and no doubt rather expensive) one along the road, it could be seen at best as bad planning, at worst as an incredible bloody waste of public money. Creativity is how we make our living, so we’re not suggesting for a moment that we shouldn’t have incredibly exciting centres of burgeoning creativity in Scotland’s biggest cities. Of COURSE we should, it just seems that the timing’s erm…a wee bit embarrassing? The City fathers have known that The Lighthouse’s ‘coat has been on a shaky nail’ for Read more...

Apologies for the extremely cheesy headline but it’s true, our MD Claire (Dunning) has just been made a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. The ‘CIM’ is the World’s biggest Marketing organisation and helps marketers at every stage of their career, with training, qualifications and resources. Basically, it’s an organisation which helps businesses to get the most from their marketing people. CIM has around 50,000 members worldwide but there are only 100 or so ‘Fellows’ in Scotland and only 10% of these ‘Fellows’ work on the ‘consultancy’ side of marketing. So, this puts Claire into the Top Ten of Marketing consultants in Scotland.
Thank God! At long last, it looks as if the diabolical rail infrastructure between Scotland’s two biggest cities will be getting upgraded. We’ll not hold our breath but there’s talk in the press today of six trains an hour, between Queen Street and Waverley and a journey time down to 35 minutes. At the moment, quite a few of the Dunning troops interact with ‘the rail’ and whilst general concensus is ‘it’s okay’ it’s not something that people eulogise about! If (and being cynical, we’re talking about decades of disappointment here, so it’s ‘if’) the train service was to improve, it would open up the employment market and stop the Weegie/Embra employment gulf that’s become a bit more than just a pub joke.
I recently stuck up a poll on Linkedin to ask what people thought of ‘the use of bad language’ (swearing) in everyday business life. I’m interested in this because recently a really good wee ‘presentation’ has being doing the rounds. It’s called, depending on where you view it, “What the Fuck is Social Marketing” or, in some places, for those of a sensitive nature “What the F*ck is social marketing?” Anyway, my point is, as soon as I saw the ‘F’ word used in business, I was drawn to it, like a rude moth to the profanity flame. However, it just so happens the content for this little slide show is erm…shit hot, it’s really clever. It covers a HUGE subject in a simple way and passes what we call ‘The Granny Test’ ie my mum would read this and Read more...

I’ve actually seen the green shots of recovery in Glasgow city centre. Many may say I’m stretching the physical metaphor of a plant powering through an otherwise concrete landscape too far but where is their optimism? Probably in the same place that they think the economy is in – the doldrums without a hint of a breeze in sight! This year at Dunning our experience has been month on month growth, increasing our client base across various sectors and company size and a broader understanding of the value of design. I know we are not alone as is clearly demonstrated in the article Glasgow Creative Focus published online by the Marketing Industry Network. The topic; How has Glasgow’s creative sector handled the recession? The answer; very well by all accounts. Read the article and then tell me that the Green Read more...

I’ve just been reading the latest issue of .Net magazine and as usual, there’s lots of new, ground-breaking ‘stuff’ being mentioned in it. Techniques, ‘apps’, nav tips, 3D design techniques…tons of zany aspects. All of which I didn’t know about last week. Now, you could look at this alarming speed of change in two ways. You could try and keep up and read EVERYTHING, using this depth of digital knowledge to give your clients a superficial glossary style guide to everything that’s of the ‘now’. Loads of stuff that they’ll probably find quite interesting but never, in a million years ever want to use. Alternatively, you could look at the marketing conundrum they face and work out how best to conquer the challenge, beginning in a good, old-fashioned way, before looking at the tools you might use, to get the Read more...

We love illustration. It’s maybe a bit ironic but the digital age has been a bit of a new dawn for illustration. In the early days of ‘tinternet’, illustration didn’t really fit in with the rigid ‘guidelines’ and accesibility rules, so it all got a bit boring. You were encouraged to use only a handfull of typefaces, so using illustration didn’t really enter-into discussions or briefings. Now, you’ve got even the biggest brands engaging with people on a much more one-to-one basis. Softer, more aesthetic images and illustration fit in with this. It’s spilling-over into all sorts of areas. The recent Designer quilt exhibition, run by the guys over at Marque Design demonstrated that there’s a real resurgence in ‘craft’. Some of the most high-profile designers on the Planet took part and it’s no surprise that a certain home-spun feel Read more...

Hi, first post WOOT! Thought Id get us started with some chat about email communication and how to get it right. We are writing our emailer about it just now… copy below. So how does everyone currently communicate with email templates, and have we all got our message right? Thoughts are welcome! Chrissy out! Header: Dunning CREATING SPARKS E-mailer communication is absolute junk-DO YOU AGREE? If you said ‘yes’ to this, perhaps we can help change your opinion? Okay, everyone’s getting bombarded with more and more irrelevant and sometimes offensive e-mail claptrap but just because Geoffrey Archer wrote some iffy novels, that didn’t mean J.K. Rowling thought that medium was a waste of time. It’s all about the right message, to the right audience. You’ll not be surprised to find out that the logistics of sending out information to important Read more...
