“From genomes to smartphones: all about the tablets?”

Nations all over the world are facing the same inexorable challenges – affordable quality of life for growing numbers of older citizens, who must cope with a rising incidence of chronic disease(s). Individuals (both as consumers and taxpayers) and Governments are worrying about the projected cost of necessary health and care services.

What’s this all about and how can business help provide the growing demand for services within the Health, care and wellness industry. Our guest speakers at this very special 5th birthday breakfast bash (easy for me to say!) were the duo and digital health & care innovation experts from Citrus Mind; Ian Sibbald and Bill Grant.

Ian kicked off the presentation by setting the scene with some astonishing facts – the worlds population is forecast to grow by 25% over the next 25 years, and not just because of a higher birth rate, much of this is to do with the increase in life expectancy. In short this means we are facing a shifting age profile and need an increasing number of services to provide for them. “This is where business comes in” explained Ian – “businesses who traditionally would not see themselves as a digital health provider can now get involved regardless of their size”

Once we were equipped with the facts and understood the growing opportunities Bill then took over to talk about the ‘Integrated Health and Care Agenda’ and how as a National Advisor he and Ian can help support businesses break into this sector.

Bill explained that the supply chain is growing and it appears there are greater numbers of small businesses collaborating to supply and support the sector. The message that came across was to look at where the opportunities are and think ‘out of the box’. What new and innovative ideas can we see when looking at the challenges and problems facing health care? It’s not just about supplying directly either – many of the major suppliers are looking for sub-contractors especially those with new and exciting ideas.

It was a fascinating presentation into an area I knew little about and I’m sure helped everyone see that, despite not having previously supplied the health sector there are opportunities they where not aware of.
